Design Reloaded
Things always look brighter as the end of the year draws nearer, particularly this year. So many opportunities await ahead. I say this not because I can see into the future. But after visiting a string of shows in September, it was clear to me that despite having just fought a tough battle through lull times, the industry already has its ammunitions reloaded to take on the market in 2010. The situation at MoOD Brussels probably illustrates this sentiment best. This year, show space was down by one whole hall yet traffic along the aisles was still sparse. Visitor numbers were down by 20 percent according to official figures. However, spirits were not dampened one bit. There were still very inspiring product launches and innovative designs to see, touch and learn about. (Read and see more on pages 38-41.)
Likewise, this issue is packed with stories on what’s new, and what to expect next year – it’s all about design that is forward, trendy, and green. Margi Kyle shares with us her predictions of the hottest colours and textures for interiors in 2010 (pg 29-31). “New colours” are apparently the best bet. Also worth exploring would be the eco-friendly option. According to a study by the Sustainable Furnishings Council, there is a significant portion of the buying public out there in the US that is very interested in at least hearing the story of sustainability when shopping for furniture. (More on pages 48-49.) Check out our Hit Guides for more thought-provoking ideas.
Still on the point of being progressive and stylish, our story on Crystallized – Swarovski Elements (pg 34-35) gives a preview of how Asian furniture can become high fashion too, by adding some bling to it. There are relevant lessons to learn from Swarovski. For a brand name to survive and excel for more than a century, it has to reinvent itself endlessly and tirelessly. Commonly thought to be a jewellery product, it now works also with apparel and furniture.
Similarly, furniture can be more than just a product of necessity. The question ‘What more?’ can only be worked out with creativity and sharp business acumen. Success stories from winners of our 2nd Furniture Leadership Awards (FLA) Malaysia and Asian FLA may offer some answers too. Stay tuned to our website at www.FurnitureAndFurnishing.com for the results on December 6 and to our January 2010 issue for a special feature.
P.S.: This issue brings us to Index in Dubai and Meble in Russia. Reports on these regions are featured here on pages 24-26 and pages 42-45.
