Tables & Chairs
Regarded as a seal of quality, the Red Dot Awards are presented to products based on reviews and evaluations by an international panel of judges each year. Entries are judged using criteria such as degree of innovation, functionality and the formal quality, and winners will earn a place in front of an international public in the red dot design museum.
This issue, we look at tables and chairs that have garnered accolades from the judges:

Dylan Seat

In-house design: ZuoGuang Wu
Using a crisp and unique style, leather and steel are seamlessly joined together through “circles” in the Dylan Seat. The double-layered round seat and the surrounding steel round rod cover all signs of assembly.

Legato Stool

Design: Dmitry Bukach, Moscow, Russia
The Legato stool is made out of individual lacquered plywood panels joined together only by shoelaces. Even though no adhesives or screws were used in its construction, it is very stable, with the added advantage of easy assembly within minutes.

Snap Chair
Feek, Antwerp, Belgium
Design: Karim Rashid, Inc., New York, US
This elegantly designed chair is 99 percent recyclable and a well-done example of “Cradle to Cradle” design. Only three different parts were used – metal frame, expanded polypropylene seat halves and plastic stoppers, and assembled by using two identical seat halves that simply snap onto a metal frame.

Sputnik Coffee and Side Tables

Copenhagen, Denmark
Sputnik consists of a collection of threelegged coffee and side tables in three different heights and diameters that allow them to be used individually or combined together. Made of compact laminate, the tabletops are available in different colour options and finishes.

GJ Chair

In-house design: Grete Jalk
A remake of the designer’s 1963 draft, the GJ chair is a classic in design history. Encompassing form, finish and function, the chair, known for its complex production, is recreated in both its original material, teak, and also in Oregon pine.

A stainless steel frame supports the tabletop of dark brown suede-like Nextel lacquer. Its sophisticated pull-out mechanism makes it possible to extend the table to accommodate up to four extra seats.

Made entirely of one material from the backrest to its legs, Gio Chair offers great comfort with the soft cushioning and flexible backrest.

Lignum Wooden Chair

Design: Oswald Design, Hamburg, Germany
Made of solid beech that is either coated with natural substances or stained, the Lignum chair upholstery, attractive stain colours and elegant upholstery fabrics.

An interesting stylistic detail is the button for height adjustment, which is hidden completely in the seat.

Design: Renata Kalarus, Krakow, Poland
Comma’s powerful lines are inspired by the elemental lines from a cube. The cylindrical section removed from the base of the back provides space for comfort and room for garments, while the two different thicknesses at the back offer good suspension and support.

magic desk is an exciting interpretation of the classic writing table, consisting of stainless steel hinges fully incorporated by hand.

This piece many precisely-worked details such as sliding storage chests, niches for paper and office equipment, sliding covers for cables, a dock beneath the top for a multiway plug, and a pivoting desk light.

The elegantly curved metal frame can be combined with various lacquers, and with an inner surface of gold or silver.

To Gather Again In March
Every March, the international furniture community gears itself up for a jam-packed calendar. Starting with MIFF in Kuala Lumpur and to finish with the CIFF-Office Show at the end of March, buyers and suppliers gather in Asia for the latest products and designs the region has to offer. This is in the form of more than a dozen exhibitions running back-to-back.
