BEST OF ASIA

Asia’s best creative minds pitted their design talents against each other in an open theme competition this March.

Held annually since 1993, the Furniture Design Award (FDA; previously known as Furniture Design Competition) seeks to uncover budding design talents and be a reputable showcase for unique Asian creations. Unlike previous years, there is no given topic for entries in FDA 2009.

In three categories – Students, Young Designers and Open – 637 entries were received this year. All are judged based on creativity, marketability and functionality, including environmental friendliness and ergonomics.

“This year, we have received an astonishing number of entries across the different categories with designers hailing from as far as Belgium and Spain. This is an excellent endorsement of FDA and shows that it is slowly but surely obtaining international recognition,” said Simon Ong, Chairman of the Design Development Committee for the Singapore Furniture Industries Council.

Within the Student and Young Designers categories, Grand Award winners walk away with S$6,000 (US$4,000) cash and Honourable Mentions take S$1,000 in cash. The Open Category offers S$2,000 cash in prize. Including winners of the Merit Award and Best Use of Material Award, they all receive also a trophy and an award certificate.

The panel of judges for FDA 2009 were: Michael Buckley (Chief Judge, from Turnstone Communications); Aamer Taher (Aamer Taher Design Studio); Carsten Ovesen (Casten Ovesen Design); Kelley Cheng (iSh magazine & Singapore Architect); Lim Choon Hong (XTRA Designs); Low Cheaw Hwei (Philips Design); Nicholas Wong (nicholas fashion label); and Patrick Chia (Design Incubation Centre, National University of Singapore).

To Gather Again In March
Every March, the international furniture community gears itself up for a jam-packed calendar. Starting with MIFF in Kuala Lumpur and to finish with the CIFF-Office Show at the end of March, buyers and suppliers gather in Asia for the latest products and designs the region has to offer. This is in the form of more than a dozen exhibitions running back-to-back.
