Innovativeness To Brave The Crisis (Part I of III)

The IMM Cologne ended on January 24, 2010 with a positive closing balance. Despite being shortened by a day, the fair managed to equal the previous year's results. "The exhibitors have used their innovativeness to brave the crisis and been rewarded by doing good business," says organiser Koelnmesse's CEO Gerald Böse. Here are some of the innovations compiled and selected by the “hit scouts” in the run-up to the event.

Fm-Polstermöbel Munzer GmbH
S-M-L Concept

Clothes that fit any body size or dimension – from petite gymnast to basketball player – are available everywhere. So why not do the same with upholstered furniture? The “S-M-L Concept” is a range of sofas and armchairs in three basic sizes; they differ from each other only in terms of seat height, seat depth and back height.

Koinor Polstermöbel GmbH & Co KG
Gargano

This is a "sofas for friends collection" and it holds its own too. With a metal base, it can be combined with any elements. The height of the back and the seat depth can be adjusted by some 19cm.

Synthesis Studio
Table Manner Table

The Table Manner Table by Synthesis Studio reminds guests who cannot seem to loosen their grip on their cellular phones of their table manners. This table contains LEDs as well as an out-of-order phone booth, and electronics that detect signals from mobile phones. Once the electronics detect the signals of the mobile phone, the LEDs built into the table light up, so that diners are directly, though gently, reminded of their table manners.

Leolux Meubelfabriek BV
Ottana

This revolving chair from designer Frans Schrofer is a tip-of-the-hat to the classic Chesterfield chair. Each chair and recliner is available in several colours and edged with lavish piping. The foot is finished with a stainless steel or, or painted upon request. A level mechanism adjusts the hardness of the seat cushion, so that it provides just the right comfort.

Paidi Möbel GmbH
Denise

The “Denise” children’s room by Paidi comes in "Icy White"/ "Acacia-Cinnamon" décors. Open shelves, dresser wardrobes and various bookshelves offer ample storage space. There is a choice of two available types of dressers, either with four wide drawers or with one drawer and two doors. Both pieces can be furnished with the matching top shelf for use as a diaper-changing table. It can serve as a small nightstand (provided with matching pillows) just as easily as a charming bench.

Vitamin design
Pisa

Pisa the solid wood shelf, sweeps away conventional interior design thinking. Instead of 90-degree angles, the vertical sidewalls are slanted, while the surface runs parallel to the ground. Pisa is manufactured using 100 percent environmentally friendly materials from solid wood, environmentally tested glues and allergen-tested surfaces.

Walter Frommholz GmbH & Co. KG
Lotus by Frommholz

Lotus creates a striking impression with its smooth line management and reaffirms the modern trend of the well-established Spenge-based company. The model on display is constructed of the finest cowhide in black. Top quality feather-core inserts in the seat cushions and soft form-fit foam in the back ensure perfect seating pleasure.

Spinnaker by Hødnebø
Spinnaker

The Spinnaker chair wears its heart on its sleeve – or back, to be more precise: it’s not material, metal, or leather – in fact, the reverse side is festooned with a real life sail. And it’s a sail that can be customized. Even the design of the Spinnaker chair is inspired by a ship’s sail. The seat surface consists of three cushions constructed with graduated levels of firmness, depending on where more or less support is needed. The spring and rocker construction is activated by body weight.

Country Living
Groovy Shelves

Groovy is a bench for kids and a bookshelf all at once. Because of its novel and pragmatic design, Groovy is easy to transport and can be stacked as high as desired. Place it as a freestanding partition, or put it against the wall like a standard shelf system. It is available in a rainbow of colours.

Möbelmanufactactur Mario Niemand
built in a moment

The "built in a moment" bed can be assembled and disassembled in minutes - and without any tools. All parts can be stored in the boxes for the head and foot components, for easy transportation. The construction of the bed is completely metal-free. All parts are finished of beech multiplex panels with surfaces treated with natural oils and wax.

Sajica
Agura

Agura is made from pure Japanese igusa. Igusa (a flexible, soft species of rush) is an organic, environment-friendly material that has a refreshing and air-purifying effect, and possesses features that regulate moisture and delivers antibacterial protection. But more than that, it is user-friendly: providing warmth in the winter and cooling in the summer.

Xentelon Lichtmöbel
Xentelon H1

Clear design, illuminated glass surfaces and reflecting light make the cupboard seem like it’s hovering on the wall. The black and white high-gloss lacquer (piano lacquer) wood surfaces create a counterpoint to the colorful light in the glass surfaces. The white and coloured high-performance LEDs are located in the nickel-plated brass rails and inject the light. The light can be handily controlled with its own 4-channnel remote control.
