Unbridled Talent
In conjunction with the Prime Minister’s Export Award, the Design Excellence Award 2008 (DEmark) premiered this year in order to give recognition to outstanding product designs. The project is supported by the Japan Industrial Design Promotion Organization (JIDPO) and the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO Bangkok), which will sponsor DEmark awardees to participate in the Good Design Award (G-Mark) in Japan. The JIDPO will also help promote the DEmark Award to be widely accepted in the international arena.

Designed by Pattarapol Chankam, the nut bench is seat made of pineapple fibre paper. While a single piece of paper is weak on its own, the bench uses hundreds of them compressed to form a strong and durable material.

Made of soft fabrics, the Cotton Pebble collection is an interesting study in contrasting textures. They look like stone pebbles yet they are soft to the touch. The background of this floor covering is inspired by grass lawns and the entire look is reminiscent of a walkway in a garden. All fibres used are salvage edge, this helps to reduce waste.

To Gather Again In March
Every March, the international furniture community gears itself up for a jam-packed calendar. Starting with MIFF in Kuala Lumpur and to finish with the CIFF-Office Show at the end of March, buyers and suppliers gather in Asia for the latest products and designs the region has to offer. This is in the form of more than a dozen exhibitions running back-to-back.
