2010 – A year of better fortunes

It’s the time of the year when we usually reflect on what happened during the past 12 months and look forward to the New Year. With the festive season, I certainly do not want to dampen anyone’s happy spirit with an account of the dreadful events that took place in 2009. However, while a big part of 2009 spelt disaster for the global furniture industry, there were signs of recovery which started mid way through the year. Many of the furniture companies I spoke to reported return of orders; the data we received and reported showed likewise. There were finally smiles on many faces which had been missing for sometime.

Even the top economists cannot predict for sure how the New Year will turn out but all facts seem to point to continued improving conditions for the new year. I am keeping my fingers crossed. In the meantime, let’s all work on strengthening our fundamentals. The basic rules for success - cheaper, better or faster.

You will see in this issue a pictorial report of our inaugural Asian Furniture Leadership Award (AFLA) held in conjunction with the 2nd Malaysian Furniture Leadership Award (MFLA). There were a total of 17 top furniture companies across Asia who received trophies and certificates for AFLA while MFLA gave out a total of 22 awards to companies in Malaysia. Both events culminated to a grand award presentation cum gala dinner honoured with the presence of YB Tan Sri Bernard Giluk Dompok, Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities, Malaysia. It was an evening of celebration and networking.

However, more important are the achievements of the Furniture Leadership Award programmes. The success of AFLA and MFLA mark a significant milestone in the history of Asian furniture, a region which accounts for a large share of the global furniture production and export yet known solely for its low costs and low pricing. AFLA and MFLA proved that in addition to competitive pricing, there is great quality and good management in Asian furniture companies. This will change the stereotype about Asia. It will also spur other Asian companies towards excellence. The future for the region is bright.

Last but not least, I wish all a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous 2010.

To Gather Again In March
Every March, the international furniture community gears itself up for a jam-packed calendar. Starting with MIFF in Kuala Lumpur and to finish with the CIFF-Office Show at the end of March, buyers and suppliers gather in Asia for the latest products and designs the region has to offer. This is in the form of more than a dozen exhibitions running back-to-back.
