Room Place Buys Levitz Building

USA: RoomPlace furniture retailer has acquired the former Levitz building to be used as a warehouse and showroom. The 170,000-square foot building will also become Room Place’s rent-to-own division, EasyHome headquarters.

RoomPlace is planning to employ 70 people within one year and will expand that number to 120 within two years, according to CEO Paul Adams. More than $7 million will be invested to renovate the building.

RoomPlace had been scouting for locations in Ohio and Illinois before choosing the former Levitz building as its distribution center, said Adams. RoomPlace has 25 stores which includes locations in Indianapolis, Carmel, Greenwood, Merrillville and Plainfield. 

Sidney Eskenazi had apparently convinced Adams to acquire Levitz building. “Sid convinced me that not only should we have another store here, but we absolutely needed to have a warehouse in the Indianapolis market,” Adams said. Sidney Eskenazi’s company, Sandor Development had built the Levitz building in the early 1970s.

The sale of the building closed on May 9. The massive fire that destroyed RoomPlace’s warehouse in Woodridge, III. had led to the speeding up of the Levitz building acquisition.

Indystar reported that this new warehouse will serve Midwestern areas that include Cincinnati, Adams said.

“This project over the next year or so, and thereafter, will bring jobs, will bring money, will bring beautification to a side of town that has long been underserved,” Hogsett said.

RoomPlace, a 104-year-old company, will be taking over a building that is once occupied by another historic furniture retailer. Levitz occupied the building at the 1970s and vacated 1999 after closing the Eastside location as part of a Chapter 11 reconstructing plan. Levitz liquidated its assets in 2008.

“I am really excited about the building being put to a good use by a company that’s going to make major improvements to it and empty a lot of people,” Eskenazi said. “It’s very important to me.”
