Gillies Sales Rise

UK: Gillies, one of the best known independent retailers in north east Scotland reported a sale increase by 5.9 percent in the 12 month ending August 31 compared to last year. Net profits were also reported as slightly higher with the sum of £1.766 million(US$2.45 million).

Gillies stated before the publication of its full accounts that the year had seen the company make significant investment in new premises to expand its warehousing capacity. This move was to ensure that the number of products that could be delivered directly to their customers would be increased and improve their choice and convenience.

The Courier reported that Gillies had increased the number of their employees to more than 150, with 100 or more based at the company’s flagship operation in Broughty Ferry. Ian Philp, managing director, said that the impact of the downturn in the oil industry had caused challenging trading conditions since the year end. However, he said that Gillies was going to continue it’s investment in its shops and improving service levels to provide a quality shopping experience for customers.
